5K pace chart
Pick your goal time: the row shows the pace you need, the speed and where you should be along the way. At the end of the row you can turn it into a pace band.

How to use the pace chart
The chart assumes an even pace: the splits show when you should pass each point if you run the same pace all the way. If you plan a faster (negative split) or slower second half, the pace band and the splits calculator give an exact plan.
In a race your GPS watch usually measures a little more than the official distance, so the pace on your watch has to be a few seconds faster than the chart for your goal time.

Frequently asked questions
What pace do I need for a 20-minute 5K?
A 20:00 5K needs a 4:00 pace per km (15.0 km/h).
What pace do I need for a 25-minute 5K?
A 5:00 pace (12.0 km/h): five minutes per kilometre, 15:00 at 3 km.
How long does a beginner take for 5 km?
For a beginner 30–40 minutes is a good first goal: a 6:00–8:00 per km pace, reachable with run-walk intervals too. In the biggest Hungarian 5K races the middle half of the finishers crossed the line between 28:42 and 36:05, the median was 32:34.
How should I pace a 5K?
Do not run the first kilometre faster than your planned pace, because a rushed start costs you dearly at the end. If you still feel good after 3 km, speed up in the last kilometre.
The charts assume an even pace over an accurately measured course and are for guidance only. Your real race time also depends on the start, the aid stations, the elevation and the weather.
